October 1 – Lord Stanley Did More Than Name a Cup

Beautiful Vancouver from Stanley Park

Beautiful Vancouver from Stanley Park

When the sun shines, join the Vancouver folks and visit Stanley Park.  24C and there was even the odd heroic guy swimming in the ocean.

Since this was a general first look at this extensive area, we bit the bullet, fired up the big motor, and took the truck. 20Km of road works on the Trans Canada Highway, but if you plan a visit, they say “completion in 2013”.

Finally, we trundled into the otherworldly totem poles, woodland and beaches of  this beautiful park.   We had lunch on an English Bay beach log, and just soaked up the sand and sea, with the eclectic passers by, and the boats on the shining water.

Elaine then wanted to go back into the park, and hike to one of the remaining “big trees”.  I had to promise her another visit, since we wanted to return to Surrey before the rush hour.  This with the optimistic thought that there might be at least ONE more sunny day in the next couple of weeks.   We did drop in to Granville Island for some fine fresh figs and fish, and driving and parking there is not for the faint of heart!

Oh yes … the rush hour.  It never actually stops!  Sadly we saw the Skytrains rush overhead, as we laboured nose-to-tail below … among more roadworks than I have seen since they built the 401-427 interchange by Toronto airport.

A big day, but no big tree … yet.   One could wish there was a better route, but Vancouver is bedeviled by big waters and few bridges.
